Why Earth System Science?

Environmental challenges are most effectively addressed by employing systems thinking. This requires an interdisciplinary approach, one that seeks to understand the interactions and feedbacks throughout the Earth's various spheres, such as the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and the human sphere.

Landslides present one example of the intersection of many Earth systems. For example, in Central America, steep, volcanic slopes are often subject to intense and prolonged rainfall, naturally resulting in slope failures. Compounding this are unplanned land use practices, which can trigger landslides and place populations and infrastructure in harm's way.
