Hurricanes at Landfall (HaL)
US Gulf Coast, Eastern US Coast
Ongoing Study
Summary
Our strategy is to develop a movable observing system that can be positioned
in front of any landfalling TC within 24 h of landfall. The observing system
is based upon the NOAA WP-3D and AFRES aircraft (and airborne expendables),
portable profilers, Doppler radars, and a surface mesonet. The observational
strategies for HaL will require careful planning, organization, and coordination
with built-in flexibility to allow adjustments to quickly evolving and poorly
predicted storm conditions and availability of observing platforms. Unlike
typical field deployments where a number of observing systems are deployed
for intensive observations during a 3-4 week period within a relatively
limited geographical area, HaL will require intensive observations for one-
to two-day periods as a hurricane approaches anywhere along the Gulf of
Mexico or eastern coast of the US during the six months of hurricane season.
